"What Lies in the Depths of History"
1947- On September 18,1947, just 68 years ago is when our beloved Air Force was founded.
1948- Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act and Women in Air Force (WAF) formed. Congress allowed the corps to 300 officers and 4,000 enlisted women.
1960- Grace Peterson became the first women to become a Chief Master Sgt.
1975- President Gerald R. Ford the Public Law 94-106 allow women to enroll in to U.S. military academies begin in the Fall 1976.
1976- Women enrolled in military academies for the first time. 157 women enrolled in the U.S. Air Force academy. WAF was abolished because women were accepted under much of the same conditions as men in the military.
1993-Air Force Major Susan Helms, who is a member of the Space Shuttle Endeavor crew, was the first U.S. military woman in space. Major Helms retired in April 2014 as a lieutenant general commanding the 14th Air Force. She obtained 5,064 hours in space, including a spacewalk of 8 hours and 56 minutes in 2001 and holds a world record for longest spacewalk time.
2013 - Barriers were lifted that prevented women from participating in direct combat by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
